Lewis & Clark reach the Pacific
Jul. 18th, 2006 08:32 amThat's old news - they got there in late 1805. The new news is that we were there Sunday and yesterday. After the Ken Burns documentary came out in 1997, we visited several of the sites in Montana and Idaho - Great Falls, Three forks, the Lolo pass, others. We've followed news of the bicentennial events with interest, and I went to the Boston Atheneum to see some of their original papers and maps when the exhibition was there. Finally, years later, we've been to the detailed interpretive centers at Fort Clatsop and Cape Disappointment and have stopped by the road pullouts at the Dismal Niche, Station Camp, and the salt works. At the other end, each of us individually has been to St Louis at different times (although none of us visited the exact place from which they left) and I think I'm about to declare our version of the expedition done.
