pretending vs cultural appropriation?
Oct. 13th, 2014 05:52 pmI would not engage in black face play-acting. I wouldn't wear a sombrero & poncho costume and pretend to be Mexican, but I spent a while in a couple of costume places considering the Day of the Dead facial make-up. After some thought, I decided it would be crossing a line as well, combining ethnic and religious groups I'm not a part of. I am happy to think positive thoughts about Diwali, but I wouldn't dress up to pretend to observe it. A salwar kameez seems to be a very sensible outfit (possibly the closest to ideal), but I think if I were to wear something similar, it would be leggings with a long baggy shirt or dress over it, not something that is clearly from south/central Asia. I am considering such outfits (in fact I'm wearing a version of it right now - leggings, baggy turtleneck, wool vest, fuzzy bedroom slippers, ratty winter hat - it's cold in the house). I wonder whether I would look like I'm trying to be younger than I actually am if I were to wear this kind of thing:

The web site trying to argue against that worry has these (what's up with those hats and bags?):

Of course, I would be wearing sneakers, because that's what I wear.
While thinking of dressing up for Halloween and wondering whether it makes any sense to impersonate someone much younger, do we think these two photos are showing the same jacket?

I don't think either of them resembles this WWII re-enactor garment, although some Peggy Carter cosplay folks have bought them

Dying my hair dark brown would be weird, too, and I am not sure I have enough hair to manage an early 1940s hairstyle. Also - I bought a one dollar wool skirt which unfortunately is plaid(brown, tan, white) and has a stain - would I be able to dye it to match the jacket?
