The people who are campaigning against extending the bottle bill in MA claim that recycling is already good enough and that adding deposits will reduce the number of bottles recycled.  Or something like that.  Their arguments don't make any sense to me, as the recycling rate on non-deposit bottles is about 25% and their TV ad from a couple of weeks ago was based on lying (they said that 90% of households in MA have curbside recycling. It's actually under 50%, but most have access to recycling somewhere).  I spent a good bit of time in a conference room near the cafeteria at the West Roxbury VA today.  The offer no recycle bins at all for the many bottles that they sell.  They have plentiful trash compactors, with little signs on the top pointing out proudly that by compacting the trash, they use fewer garbage bags to remove it from the premises. The amount of plastic they are wasting by compacting the bottles is not mentioned. I had vaguely thought it ws illegal in Massachusetts to mix recyclables in with the trash, but maybe it doesn't matter on federal property?

Sadly, lying is a pretty effective campaign technique.
