changing seasons
Nov. 1st, 2006 04:06 pmI was feeling wistful yesterday at the Lexington Farmer's Market. It was the last day, and vendors were wishing customers a nice winter and saying things like see you next summer. The Davis Square and Copley Square markets hang on for another month, but harvest time really is over; there are no more ears of sweet corn or bunches of pea tendrils, just traditional winter stuff like root vegetables and squashes, plus greenhouse lettuces and such. I'm not one of the locally grown only people, but I try to live that way somewhat. There's nothing like the luxury of late summer produce choices.
Also, even though this will be my 30th winter here, the amount of darkness always seems unnatural to me.
As is frequently the case, I find myself identifying with an Arlo & Janis cartoon

But it's not winter yet. I was out raking leaves in a t-shirt and leggings, and once the leaves were gone one could see that dandelions are still (again?) blooming in the yard.

Date: 2006-11-02 06:56 pm (UTC)of course longitude is one, but not just the 3-hr timezone difference: the sun sets at a different numerical time due to boston's location within its timezone than it does for eugene.
higher lattitude means that even though eugene almost never gets snow, we do get fewer daylight hours in the winter.
i'm not sure whether it's ocean currents or some other cause that makes boston colder and drier in winter; maybe just that it's windier, or that weather travels east.. or is it west.. shoot.
anyhow. but yes, it does get dark earlier now.
which affects all kinds of things, not least of which people's behaviors and moods.
it especially amuses me that I can generally tell when it's snowing outside just by observing people's moods, without being told or stepping/looking outside.
