I don't crave the new Iphone, nor the previously existing Nokia that has a lot of the same features but apparently isn't as cool.
The technology advance I'd like is for the Minuteman Library Network catalogue to act more like
Amazon, or any good web browser. If you don't remember the whole title, but type simple snow at Amazon or Yahoo you get the whole title and author. If you type it in to the MLN catalogue in a title search you get nothing, even though most of the branches have a copy of "As Simple as Snow." The reference librarian suggested that I never use the title search unless I am sure of the complete title, and use the keyword search instead. She also suggested avoiding the subject search. OK, now I know, but does that make any sense? Isn't a keyword supposed to be about underlying theme or topic? In this case, neither simplicity or snow is particularly relevant to the plot. I often think it would be fun to be a reference librarian, but maybe not if it means keeping a straight face while advising people not to do a title search for a title.
