I'm on the email newsletter list from the Clover chain of food places. Yesterday there was a notice that they would be doing take out only for the day, and then closing for a while. We went to the Burlington branch at about 11 AM, hoping to crossover from the breakfast to lunch menus (yes - popovers AND sandwiches). We tried to maintain some distance. A managerish person asked if we would use potatoes. We said yes, and he gave us (rather than sold us) a large shopping bag full of PEI tubers. It seemed obvious on St Patrick's Day to have potatoes and cabbage (and tofu), but I will need to think of many other things to do with them. Under the current fearful times, would the food pantry take some? The central Clover location near Inman Square was preparing whole boxes of perishables, and apparently was mobbed. I hope not much was wasted at the Burlington store, but worry that some things will be tossed. It is amazing to me that restaurants manage (even with data and gut feelings) to estimate the right amount of food for one day. It's a good thing that they won't come back to compost-land whenever things reopen, though.
