At this point, when people are murdered by the police (in that case it was the national guard) on a regular basis, maybe it's not so notable. It was three more years before the war ended, so it's hard to feel it was as much of a watershed as was claimed.
May 4th was a busy day in protest history, apparently. Having been taught about the Treaty of Versailles over and over again in school history classes, I learned *today* about the May 4th Movement of student protests in Beijing in 1919. Arthur knows a lot more Chinese history than I do, but neither of us remembered allowing Japan to keep Shandong being part of the T of V. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Fourth_Movement
I don't think I even heard anything about it last year, for the 100th anniversary.
