a joyous occasion
Jun. 22nd, 2020 11:28 amDecades ago, two people were friends in high school (we did not know them then). They moved away, went to college, married people, had children. Unmarried those people. Re-met. Dated for something like fifteen years, and decided that June 2020 would be a good time to get married (why not ten years ago? Why at all? I like them but am not close enough to ask those questions). Things shut down. Many people have postponed weddings this year, but they decided to go ahead with their planned date, which was last Saturday. After committee meetings (this is a UU congregation we're talking about, after all), the decision was made that the sanctuary, shut tight since mid-March, could be open for ten distanced, masked people for the wedding. Minister, musician, sexton, couple, and five relatives. The rest of us (probably a couple of hundred people) attended via zoom. Some zoomers dressed up, some not so much. There were at least five picture hats that I suspect might not have been worn in person. The wedding started fifteen minutes late, because way too many people tried to join the meeting at the last minute and sat in the zoom waiting room, but once it began, it was lovely. Two of the in-person offspring and one from a distance did readings. The self-written vows were very different yet both touching and personality-appropriate. One of the local daughters had organized a version of the now-common car parade celebrations. Many of us who live nearby jumped in our cars as soon as the ceremony was over, and drove around the circular driveway next to the church, waving to the newlyweds, who were standing on the grass by the sanctuary building. (there was also someone on a bicycle).
They might have been sorry not to have a reception, but I hope the love that surrounded them (from homes and cars) made up for any disappointment.
