The world's luckiest person is grumpy
Jul. 19th, 2020 10:16 pmFriday night the sky was clear and the stars were sparkly, but we got the timing wrong and missed the comet. Last night it was hazy, and tonight even more like cloudy. I have seem comets before. I know people who saw it around here, and I've seen nice pictures, including one from Scotland. I shouldn't be so disgruntled. Mostly I'm itchy. I got several bites while standing outside last night, and I am afraid that one or more mosquito has entered the house, because I got a bunch of bites today while inside. It has made me wonder about their biting strategy and storage capacity. Why not just pick a good spot and suck her fill? I have bites of various sizes on both arms, neck, scalp (!), and several places on my torso, plus a few small ones on my leg that were from last week, I think. Clearly I was not exsanguinated, and I'm only a little worried about EEE. I am trying to go for a feeling of nostalgia, thinking how much like my childhood it was to be sweaty, itchy, and have a scraped knee. The knee happened against a chair in the house, not outside, but still, constantly picking at knee scabs was a part of being a kid. On the other hand, I have not spotted myself with reddish purple liquid with toxic chemicals - my Great Aunt Mary felt that merthiolate/mercurochrome daubed on was the right way to treat bites. This would have been in the early 1960s, I guess, decades before they were removed from the market because the mer part, not surprisingly, was mercury. Having just looked them up, I was surprised to see that they were brand names for thiomerosal, the preservative that set off the anti-vaxxers. Huh. My mother more sensibly went for Calomine lotion for bites, and we only occasionally saw Aunt Mary. She was my maternal grandfather's sister, and when she cam to visit my grandparents (who lived next door, basically), she filled one of the old style makeup things with medications, including OTC items.
Hers may have been like this one (trying to get the era right)

I have this later version, but blue, that is filled with handbells
