When Flo was little, we built a flimsy sukkah in the back yard, based on a design in the Jewish Catalogue, but not as sturdy (although it usually stood for the week). We stopped at some point, and she has been out of our house for fourteen years, so it's been longer than that. Arthur is not religious, and our observance of his cultural heritage varies (our Yom Kippur observance this year was me watching the Havurat Shalom evening service on Zoom, which I liked, and both fasting, plus my usual ruminations on Jonah. This year I was fixated on the worm, and the animals that had to wear sackcloth and ashes). Our regular thing for Sukkoth is to stroll up to the temple once, trespass in their sukkah, and say the blessing over the bread. Also attend the party at a friend's parents' house. They have a large, sturdy sukkah, and a fabulous spread. Sigh. When will there be potluck feasts again, or even a big tub of hummus into which everybody dips crudités? who knows. Those activities are not possible this year, although I'm sending a we are sorry not to see you message to the friend.
I decided to put up a very minimalist sukkah next to the garage (it is allowable to use one permanent wall).
We'll see how soon it falls down. Detail-oriented niece is skeptical about the "roof", but it has a board and some greenery and a paper chain, plus easy viewing of stars, so what more could one want?
