I had seen rapturous comments on twitter when it became available. We were less enthusiastic. The singing and dancing were great. It was a pleasure to watch the images go by. Our problem was elsewhere. There was supposed to be math and tech underlying the amazing inventions, but (as spoiled by the trailer above), what it came down to was magic. And not just some, but as Arthur said, fantasy cranked up to 10 when 1 would have been about right. One could go with it for a while, but then it just was annoying. Emotional moments seemed crammed in without the right amount of build-up. And why on earth did one of the main mechanical characters look so much like WALL-E? The Christmas tie-in is very slight, which was fine with us.

The first one made me think of Newsies. It has been 28 years, but what the heck, it could be the same choreographer. Then I discovered something I'd never known about the IMDb - the choreographer is an afterthought, in the "additional crew" section. Really? I checked Bob Fosse, for crying out loud, and even
in the case of someone who might be a main reason to see something, he's there at the end of the long section of crew members (when he was the director, he was near the top).
