I've been a mild Dr Who fan since being introduced to the series during the Tom Baker era. The difference now is that there's the internet, which means it's possible to be part of fandom instead of just liking it alone.

In the last several months, I've watched lots, read lots of discussion, bought a toy version of a sonic screwdriver, etc. Getting ready for the season finale (which aired this evening in Britain, including on a big screen in Trafalgar Square as part of the Pride London celebrations), I borrowed the one-off 1983 special episode "The Five Doctors" from the library yesterday. I watched a bit of it, but got sidetracked by watching (in two evenings) all ten episodes of the original BBC series "Queer as Folk" (1999), written by Russell T Davies, who has been the head writer of Doctor Who for the past 3 seasons (and the creator of spin-off show "Torchwood"). One of the main QAF characters is a longtime Dr Who fan and there are lots of references. I have no desire to watch the US series inspired by the UK original - surely it has nothing to do with Dr Who at all.

I'm not sure I agree with the philosophy, but I found this quotation interesting.
"Unrequited love - it's fantastic. It never has to change. It never has to grow up, and it never has to die.

Also, episode 5 has a remarkably funny scene with cell phones and call waiting. Better even than the one in "L'auberge Espanol."
