I was a bit mystified by that. Sojourner Truth no doubt flexed her trunk on a regular basis, but it seems a bit arbitrary until one goes to the source, which is a massage therapist's blog. There are in fact exercises mentioned, but she also philosophizes about other stuff. In the same blog post in which ST's image appears, there are many other old photos, so why don't we have Mary Wollstonecraft (et al) offered as an example of trunk flexion?
