I've been thinking about how I would respond if our house were destroyed by a tornado or flood. I'm sure that if we got through it physically unscathed I'd be one of those people on the news who claimed that that was all that mattered. I think my response to starting over would be to get only a minimal amount of stuff, really the opposite situation from my current owning too much. All the irreplaceable items couldn't be replaced, so they'd have to just be memories. Handmade stuff, stuff passed down from grandparents (or older), out of print books, LPs. The internet can replace some musical and reference resources, etc. So does that mean I could bear to give almost everything away now without without the helpful intervention of an act of nature? I don't think so, but it's interesting. Could we be happy living in a studio apartment? I don't think I'd like to live anywhere that I couldn't have a compost bin.
