I saw Cowboys & Aliens yesterday, and Attack the Block today. At a very basic level, they both deal with with groups of people who are enemies to each other who unite to fight the invaders, and find out that they like each other after all. More or less. High body counts, but the losses feel sadder in Attack the Block, for the most part, and there is more gore there. The aliens in C& A look more convincing (possibly a reflection of the $163,000,000 to $13,000,000 ratio). A the B passes the Bechdel test, C & A doesn't, really. The dialogue is better in A the B. Writers/producers in both get positive marks for talking to the locals (South London teens, Chiricahua Apache) to get the language right.
The last time I saw Harrison Ford on the big screen was Witness, in 1985, unless one counts the reissue of the Empire Strikes Back, which Flo & I saw at the Arlington Capitol whenever that was. (I've seen several videos with him since then). Jodie Whittaker, one of the leads in A the B, was three years old in 1985, and most of the other actors in that film hadn't even been born. I had a brief flash that the anti-alien forces in C&A could use the help of the Serenity crew, but that was one of the strengths of the Firefly series - humans are enough to be all the characters. No aliens needed.
