narrowly focused runner demographics
Jan. 7th, 2012 07:07 pmI ran in a local cancer-survivor support race today (one of the recipients of the money was the leukemia & lymphoma charity). Running at about the same time I ran a different Lexington 5K in November, in which I placed 3rd of women in my age cohort, I came in 6th today. There were 70 finishers in the F 50-59 category, out of 819 overall. That's 8.5% of the whole field. That seemed like a lot to me, so I looked up a couple of other races. The one from November had 8% in that group. In the Somerville Homeless coalition 5k in October, women my age were only 2% of the finishers. Does that say something about suburbia? About Lexington specifically? Too small a sample is what it probably says.

The clock time was 26:06, but my chip time was 25:32, which means it took me more than half a minute to shuffle to the starting line. Seems about right. We started along a parking lot's driveway, basically.
