long distance Walter Lewin groupie
Jul. 2nd, 2012 02:10 pmWhen I was taking Physics at UML, I watched relevant episodes of Walter Lewin's MIT lectures. They didn't help a whole lot academically, because we weren't using calculus and stuff, but they were emotionally helpful, because it made the subject matter seem fun. I used the open courseware site http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/physics/8-01-physics-i-classical-mechanics-fall-1999/ but apparently they are now also available on itunes.
Japanese public television has commissioned a set of lectures that are more at my level, being filmed at MIT, open to the public. I've attended the first three so far and am enjoying them. This morning, the guy sitting next to me had come FROM ITALY in order to be in the room with WL, whose lectures he's watched repeatedly at home. He was so excited at the idea of getting an autograph or photo that he was trembling. I've gone to book signings and seen plays featuring people I admire, but I don't think I've based a lengthy journey around those activities.
