Possible to catch up?
Feb. 7th, 2014 01:23 pmI guess the biggest news is that my father fell a couple of weeks ago and broke his right clavicle (collarbone). [more details snipped, because it dawned on me that I was violating his medical privacy.] The conclusion was that he wouldn't be able to get up and down (including in and out of bed) without help, so for the time being, we've hired caregivers. I was there for almost a week, and I or we will keep going as needed. The home PT provided by medicare has already started working on his leg strength and posture, hoping to prevent future falls. It's probably early to rehab the shoulder, but fall prevention is the most important anyway.
With coincidental timing, we had grab bars installed in our bath/shower. We're pretty able bodied, but had noticed occasionally doing stuff like holding on to the towel rack when getting out of the tub, so we decided to be pro-active. It's really easy to get used to them - this morning in the shower I grabbed one of the bars without thinking while lifting a foot to be washed.
During the snow day on Wednesday, I baked bread. It must have been years since the last time I baked any type other than quick bread, which I do often - the yeast package said best before December 2012. I proofed it and it was fine. We tend to buy high quality bread anyway, but this was so good we ate almost the entire smaller loaf in one meal. I don't think I'll do it regularly, though. For some reason, it seems like more nuisance and mess than other food prep, and apparently I'm careless when kneading - I thought I had cleaned up, but kept finding bits of flour in weird places for another day. We don't have a mixer or a bread machine or any of the appliances that people use. It's not like kneading is the hard part - it's the clean-up.
