I saw a magnet the other day that said "Everything happens for a reason" and attributed it to American proverb.  My first thought was that cause and effect usually are involved, but I don't think that is what they meant.  My second thought was about the western history of optimistic statements.   There is Julian of Norwich (1342-1416)'s repetitive statement:
"All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well" (although she said that God said it, not that she made it up).  ([livejournal.com profile] acw, do you remember the song?)
There is Bob Marley (1945-1981)'s "Every little thing gonna be all right."
and there is (I don't know his or her name; I hope still living)

Sure. The Bells of Norwich; I think the original words and music were by the inescapable Sidney Carter (inspired, of course, by Julian's writings), but the arrangement we sang was by Shag Graetz.
