catching up
Aug. 4th, 2014 02:58 pm For most of last week, we were in West Lafayette, IN (home of Purdue University) for the annual convention ("festival") of the International Jugglers' Association. I barely juggle, after 37 years of sporadic practice, so I'm out of place to begin with, and it always feels to me like I'm invading the guys' vacation (there are women who juggle, but they're in the minority, and all of Arthur's juggling friends are guys). On the other hand, I do like watching it, and it means that I go to places that I wouldn't otherwise (like Purdue). So every year, it's a hard decision about whether to go or stay home. I'm in the very back of this photo (not what most of the time in the gym is like - the "big toss-up" is a tradition dating back many decades). I don't like to be hit by clubs falling from above. One who minds being hit occasionally by juggling props probably shouldn't be in a room full of them, though.

A teenager with whom I am slightly acquainted was wearing a shirt like this on Thursday: I was awed by the clever word play when I first saw it, and I smile whenever I think about it now.

In a non-juggling afternoon out, we went to see the site of the battle of Tippecanoe (the background for the campaign slogan "Tippecanoe & Tyler Too," as William Henry Harrison was the general in charge of the US forces).

American history is sad and bloody. The gift shop was nice, with a mix of history books and re-enactor goods. I don't remember previously being in a gift shop that sold calico yard goods and stovepipe hats as well as coloring books and bird whistles.
Yesterday was our anniversary. We were married at the Pierce House in Lincoln, and almost every year, we go there for at
least a few minutes and a snack. We got back in time to do so yesterday, and drove there directly from Alewife, where I had
left the car during our time away. Here we are, standing under the tree (or part of the tree) under which we stood then.

We finally arrived home to find mouse droppings all over the kitchen table. Not anywhere else in the kitchen, as far as we
could tell, but we cleaned all the counter-tops and floor anyway. We loaded a peanut butter cracker into the humane trap
and left it overnight. No trapped mouse when I left at 7:25 AM. When I got home this afternoon, there were more mouse poops (near the radiator, not on the table) and the cracker had spontaneously generated hoards of ants. Unintended consequences.
