lauradi7dw For the last eight years, at least, the Secret Service folks have given the appearance of being incompetent, at best, and possibly deliberately trying to leave (candidate, then President) Obama in harm's way - people allowed into large campaign venues unscreened, people allowed to break into the White House grounds, drunkenly hanging out with prostitutes, on and on Today, they did something that might lead one to believe that they care. It's not to protect the President, though. There has been a petition circulating to make the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland (home to July's Republican National Convention) reverse its no-firearms policy for the convention. Trump already predicted (suggested?) rioting if he doesn't get the nomination (presuming a majority of primary delegates). The city of Cleveland is purchasing a gazillion bucks worth of riot gear (enough for 2,000 officers. The total cost may actually be closer to 20 million dollars). It might have dawned on the SS agents that the candidates that they are supposed to be protecting might get caught in the crossfire in the convention room if they allow firearms on the floor.

This way, even if the streets (or the Cuyahoga) run red with blood of Left vs Right (or whatever), people inside of the building might only be harmed by thrown fists or chairs.
I'm pretty pessimistic, and suggested to Arthur that he invite a Cleveland friend to do something out of town that week. Arthur thinks he (the friend) is far enough away from the potential ruckus to be safe. I don't.
I'm quite close to the top of the privilege heap, but in the last few weeks, I've been feeling frightened in a way that I never did before. It seems at least possible to me that Trump will prevail, and will continue to urge on the people who feel that they can beat up on anybody who disagrees. It's a good wake-up call for me - lots of groups in the US have been targets all along. It is just (possibly) new to me (or to my psyche. I still have not been harmed, knock on wood).
