the Declaration, then and now
Jul. 4th, 2016 08:24 amAs always on the 4th of July, I listened to the NPR reading of the Declaration of Independence. I tend to zone out during the grievances against King George, on the theory that a man who participated in slavery (T Jefferson) didn't have to right to complain about anybody else's shortcomings, but I noticed this morning that some of them could match up exactly with Trump's rally promises.
This week he said that when he's president, he'd put Hillary in jail
"He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers."
There is the promise of that Wall, plus all his pronouncements about Muslim immigrants
"He has endeavored to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither"
Trump has been ranting against our current trade deals
"For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world"
Trump has encouraged his supporters to confront opponents to his cause, sometimes violently
"He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us"
Time to go out and do celebratory things of the day (run in a race, see part of a parade, ring bells), but this will be in the back of my mind.
