I find Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui as charming as everybody else does

Still, I was a little perturbed when she said that her less than ideal team performance on Sunday might have been because of her period, which had left her feeling weak and tired (her team came in fourth, not too shabby). My automatic response was that women have spent decades (centuries?) pointing out that menstruation doesn't make one less capable, and wondering whether this will set things back for Chinese athletes. In the aftermath, though, it was fascinating to learn that China (manufacturer to the world) is just now gearing up to make tampons domestically. Tampons and swimming go together so well. Old joke, which presumed familiarity with advertisements of my youth: "Two kids were walking along and found a dollar. Kid 1: What should we buy? Kid 2: Let's buy Tampax! Kid 1: What is that? Kid 2: I don't know, but with Tampax you can go swimming and sailing." Do they at least have Ibuprofen in China (and around the world). Before ibuprofen was OTC, I had menstrual cramps bad enough that I occasionally vomited, once nearly passed out, and lost sleep. I had to go home from work once. I remember lying on the bathroom floor of the Organic Food Cellar in Cambridge (long gone), with female staffers coming in one at a time to recommend herbal or supplement remedies. After ibuprofen, everything changed. I understand that ibuprofen is hard on one's internal filtration system, but I only used it a few days a cycle, and stopped taking it after the periods stopped.
After the news this week that Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore was being suddenly cancelled by Comedy Central, I started taping it to watch, even though I had only rarely watched it during its run (apparently I'm not the only one). Last night (Wednesday)'s episode had a segment called Tampon Tuesday on Wednesday, which used Fu's now-famous period revelations as a starting point. I was intrigued to learn that there had been Tampon Tuesdays before that, so I looked it up and found this:

The combination of the floods in Louisiana and the fires in California, both of which have necessitated evacuations, have again made me think of stuff. If our house were wiped out by a disaster, would I try to replace most of what's here? I doubt it. So why do I cling to so many objects now? Is it because of

It's back to school time. I am feeling a strong urge to send school supplies to Louisiana, but I haven't tracked down a charity that it doing that specifically. I would include back to school clothes, I guess, because probably many students have already chosen their new sneakers and first day of school outfits.
