The thing I don't understand about Trump, who has appeared on TV and radio for decades, is that he doesn't seem to realize that something one says is available to the public, at the time one says it or possibly forever. There is no sense denying something a hundred million people heard you say five minutes earlier.

I think it's part of the same phenomenon that allows xians to do whatever horrible thing, and then immediately be forgiven when they "repent and ask jesus for forgiveness". Not everyone and not all the time, but big parts of America love that script. At its best it's forgiveness and a chance to wipe the slate clean of past wrongdoings/mistakes.
