The Trumps
Nov. 4th, 2016 01:39 pmI have been assuming since summer that Trump & Pence will be elected. Or maybe since 2008, which I told various people that I don't expect to live long enough to see a woman president. That administration would be scary in some ways, but at this point, after months of listening to the horrifying things my fellow citizens have said, it is clear that no matter who wins the election, the US will be a yucky place to live for even more people than before. I have plans to keep going back and forth between here and my parents' house, plus a couple of other relative visits. Otherwise, will we need to hunker down for years, hiding out while Trump's metaphorical call to burn it all down is taking literally?
In the meantime, I have been unreasonably obsessed with Donald and Malania's clothing. Someone who is as wealthy as DT should be able to afford bespoke suits, but he clearly wears something off the rack, because his jackets don't fit right - he rarely buttons the jacket, and the sleeves are too short compared to his shirt sleeves. I tracked down an ad he made for the Trump line of men's clothing, at Macy's, before that became one of his defunct businesses. The interview he did with David Letterman in which it became clear that the clothing was made cheaply overseas has had a lot of exposure. The garments look a bit shoddy but not worn. I have decided that when the company went out of business, he must have warehoused the remaining clothes and is gradually working his way through them. So the jackets are the wrong size, because his torso has expanded in the meantime.
Melania's suits seem well-fitted, but some of her other clothing is inexplicable - the blouse she wore during yesterday's speech was possibly the ugliest shirt-like garment I have ever seen. I admit that she was a fashion model, which may have given her a distorted view of what counts as conventional clothing.
At any rate, it's none of my business what *anybody* wears, as long as it is suitable for the weather and meets vague community standards.
Melania has gotten a lot of mocking about saying that her personal project for her FLOTUS term will be to reduce the cyber bullying of children. The fact that DT and his followers are heavy-duty cyber bullies of adults may not be relevant. Teenagers driving other teens to suicide is a genuine problem, and if she wants to work on that, it would be good. I was told that young Barron is home schooled. Is that because he was bullied? One could rudely speculate.
I was pleased to hear Melania say that she studied for the citizenship test. I said in a couple of conversations a while back that DT's ignorance of the Constitution doesn't make any sense, as his immigrant wives must have had study guides for the citizenship tests around the house (or the Versailles-decorated apartment, more accurately). Whenever I said that, the people I was talking to scoffed at the idea of DT as a helpful family member, quizzing the immigrant spouse. She didn't say one way or the other whether Donald had helped, so maybe he really didn't.
