Useful interview with Juliette Kayyem. I've been outraged at the thought of Rudy Giuliani as secretary of state. Nikki Haley is an interesting choice, and light years better, even though she might not be my pick under other circumstances.

I'm going to a panel tonight at least partly about being a better ally to Muslims in the US.
More than six months after the first announcement of defects, I finally have a new air bag in my car (Honda). I had been calling the dealer once a month. For months, they said that Honda would write to me when the part was available, but that never happened. Last week when I called, they said that they had the part in stock. I hope the new part is improved, and that it was installed properly. I am rather skeptical of my dealer - I wonder if they were lying to me about needing a new battery, but since Winter is Coming (GRRM said in an LJ post last week "I told you so"), I don't want to risk getting stuck somewhere in the cold and dark with a dead battery, so I bought a new one. Other stuff like that really makes me wonder, but I think I'm set up for the near future. I also need to get my mother's car in NC checked out and inspected really soon. I'm the only one who drives it currently, but she is still listed as the owner on the title and insurance, even though the agent knows I drive it. My parents don't drive any more, but both have licenses. My father is 94, has dementia and peripheral neuropathy, plus other problems, but NC was happy to renew his license online without even having him show up for an eye test.
I spend lots of time on clothing/costume fantasies. I had very nearly decided to do a cosplay outfit based on the latest (close to my age) General/Admiral Leia Organa, but I could never duplicate the amazing version this woman made, so I decided to abandon the idea.

I am still planning to wear something era-appropriate when we go to see Hidden Figures in January, but it might not be what I'm dreaming about. I really am craving a shirtwaist dress like the ones I wore in elementary school (not like what they made at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory, but like the garment called that in the 1950s and 1960s). Commercial pattern companies like Simplicity and Vogue have many reproduction patterns for other early 1960s women's clothes (I own one for a sheath dress, and one for a suit. Plus I still have the patterns for all the clothes I made in junior high school, but those were for pubescent girls, not grown-up mathematicians) but no shirtwaist per se. I found a dress I like on Etsy and would be willing to buy it

but the original owner's waist was smaller than mine.
There are also a number of 50-60 year old sewing patterns on Etsy for similar garments, but ALL of those women had really small waists, at least compared to me (and generalizing, compared to many other women my age in 2016). I could push the envelope of my sewing skills and try to alter a pattern to fit me, but I wouldn't look like the women of the time, I guess. Is this to be an homage costume or a reenactor garment? That's the kind of thing I think about. If I can't make up my mind, I have a suit of my grandmothers from later in the 1960s that almost fits.
We recommend "Arrival." I was in tears on the way home from the theater, because it was a reminder of the fact that any career dream I've ever had came to naught. I majored in Linguistics in the 1970s, and got a warehouse job after graduation, with a brief detour behind the counter at a car rental place. My efforts earlier this century to become a Physical Therapist Assistant blew up because I really wasn't suited for it(getting mostly A's in the classwork wasn't nearly enough). Even in terms of hobbies, not much success. I've tried many fiber arts for most of my life and never got good at any. After fifteen years of tap classes, I'm mediocre at best. I'm an OK ringer. My most successful product (loosely speaking) is a high-quality offspring, but that could have been a fluke. We definitely devoted ourselves to parenting. At this point, I'm trying hard to be a helpful daughter.
