Girl Scouts together
Dec. 29th, 2016 12:07 pmI was sad to hear about Carrie Fisher, and decided to go back to the idea of dressing up at General Organa for the February Disney Princess race I plan to run. I meant to check the airplane yesterday to see whether there was a defibrillator, but I forgot. I will have lots more chances, as I fly at least four times a month.
Yesterday, when Debbie Reynolds died, what popped to mind was a record (an EP, as it turned out, when I looked it up) she made for Girl Scouts. It was 1966, and it was called "Follow the Piper." The B side was "White coral bells." I don't know whether or not she was multi-tracked so that she could sing all the parts of the round. I remembered her being in a GS leader uniform in the publicity at the time. Wikipedia confirmed that she led the troop in which Carrie and her step-sister were members in the mid-late 1960s, taking Friday afternoons off from the studio to do so. In the promise words "a sister to every other Girl Scout," I guess they were therefore my sisters as well.
I was surprised that Debbie (nee Mary Frances) was married at age 23, mother to Carrie a year later. I'm a year older than Carrie was, but my mother just turned 89, outliving Debbie by five years.
