The son of a friend of mine is a serious movie watcher, and believes that movies worth watching should been seen in a cinema. His scornful belief is that people who watch movies at home are constantly checking emails or social media, and not really attending. He convinced my friend to see "Roma" in a theater, instead of watching it on Netflix. We watched it on Netflix. We were busy reading subtitles, so we weren't using devices, but we also watched it over a couple of nights instead of straight through, and made occasional remarks to each other. The time recently that I really was "that person" was when we watched "First Man." I kept looking up historical details as we watched. Possibly more extreme, but not in terms of the internet, when it got to be January of 1967 and the guys were climbing into the prototype Apollo capsule, I said to Arthur "I can't watch this," and left the room. I suppose I could have done a prolonged trip to the rest room if we had seen it in a movie theater.
In the old way, I am also re-reading the Neil Armstrong bits in Andrew Chaikin's "A Man on the Moon. Hand-held, but not electronic.

I am not doing a binge of Oscar nominees in preparation for Sunday's show, only a little bit of which I expect to watch, but noticed that we have seen 4/5 of the nominees for Production Design, missing only "Mary Poppins Returns." I presume it is still in theaters somewhere, but I really don't want to see it. I also plan to maintain my record of having never seen any version of "A Star is Born."
We listened to the Original Song nominees on youtube. "I'll Fight" might be good to learn as a singalong at future protests, but in terms of pleasure of listening, I pick "When a Cowboy Trades his spurs for Wings."
Hoping for "Black Panther" for Best Picture and Costume Design. Hoping for Regina King for supporting actress, Richard E Grant for supporting actor, Roma for cinematography, First Man for Visual Effects. Period End of Sentence for documentary short (I haven't seen the others, but this is interesting and important). Minding the Gap, nominated for Documentary Feature, aired on PBS's POV on Monday, but we only watched a couple of minutes of it. It's available online, I think. We loved RBG.
