I have a few major regrets about trips not taken - to Peru when our friend Chris was there, Zimbabwe in the early 1980s when ringers we barely knew sort of invited us. Most recently, and very specifically, I'm sorry I wasn't on the beach in Perth for Australia Day. Fireworks! Comet! Lightning!

(and of course the swan bells are there)

This is one reason I've been so annoyed at all of the Comet McNaught pictures on APOD lately ... they've been so "real time" that most of them haven't been breathtakingly high quality, and so by the time a Really Awesome picture rolls around (e.g., today's), it's like, enh, a comet.

But this is quite an awesome picture.

Sometimes it's nice to have a not breathtaking comet hanging around, though. I guess it was Hayakutake that was in the neighborhood for a long time, visible to the naked eye (as long as seeing a tail wasn't necessary). It was a pleasure to look up on the way back from Route 2 and see it night after night. More companionable than breathtaking. I was sorry when it left.

Do not get me started on trips not taken. EEEKS, I have a bazillion of them.
